Raising the Trophy High: What We Learned at Accountex North 2025

Last week, our team made the journey to Manchester for Accountex Summit North 2025, one of the biggest events in the accountancy profession’s calendar. Not only did we return inspired and energised by the day’s discussions, but we also managed to grab a photo with the championship trophy — a fitting symbol of the winning mindset we want to bring back to the office.

Stepping Into the Summit

The venue, Manchester Central, provided the perfect backdrop for a day of learning and connection. From the moment we walked in, the energy was unmistakable. Rows of exhibitors lined the hall, professionals gathered in clusters for animated discussions, and seminar rooms quickly filled with delegates eager to hear the latest updates.

For us, the event was about much more than ticking off CPD hours. It was a chance to step outside the day-to-day, look at the bigger picture, and ask ourselves: what does the future of accountancy look like, and how can we prepare our clients and our firm for it?

What Stood Out for Us

Making Tax Digital (MTD)

With the clock ticking down to MTD for Income Tax Self Assessment, the sessions reinforced that firms need to be proactive. We heard practical advice on piloting systems now, rather than waiting until the last minute, and were reminded how vital client communication will be in ensuring a smooth transition.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

AI was one of the most discussed topics of the day, and it’s clear that it will reshape the profession in the years ahead. We heard examples of firms using AI to speed up reconciliations, support forecasting, and even assist with client queries. At the same time, the message was clear: AI is only as good as the people guiding it. Accuracy, ethics, and oversight remain essential.

Cybersecurity and AML

With more firms embracing digital solutions, the risks around cybercrime and compliance are greater than ever. We were struck by how many firms have experienced attempted cyberattacks, and how few currently hold recognised certifications. It was a sobering reminder that client trust depends not only on technical expertise but also on robust systems and strong internal controls.

Carbon Accounting and ESG

One of the most refreshing conversations was around sustainability. Rather than seeing ESG reporting as an obligation, speakers encouraged firms to view it as an opportunity. Clients are increasingly being asked to demonstrate their environmental credentials — and accountants can play a vital role in helping them do so. It’s an area we’re excited to explore further.

Technology and Networking

The vendor hall was alive with innovation. From cloud accounting platforms to workflow management tools and reporting dashboards, the solutions on display showed just how far the industry has come. Beyond the tech, the chance to meet other professionals, exchange stories, and share experiences was equally valuable. Sometimes, the best learning comes from a coffee and a chat.

Bringing the Lessons Home

We left Accountex North with notebooks full of ideas and plenty of food for thought. But the real challenge is in what happens next. We’ll be:

- Reviewing our MTD strategy to ensure both our team and our clients are fully prepared.

- Identifying low-risk areas where AI could improve efficiency without compromising accuracy.

- Taking a fresh look at our cybersecurity framework, making sure our systems are as strong as possible.

- Exploring how to incorporate carbon accounting into our services, particularly for clients already engaged with sustainability.

- Continuing conversations with vendors to see which tools could help us streamline and improve the way we work.

These steps aren’t about change for the sake of change. They’re about making sure we’re always delivering the best possible service to our clients, while also preparing for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

A Winning Feeling

The highlight of the day might have been the photo with the championship trophy — a fun reminder that success is about more than just turning up; it’s about showing up with energy, enthusiasm, and ambition.

That’s exactly how we’re approaching the months ahead. Accountex North 2025 gave us the insights we needed, but it also gave us the motivation to raise our game. Just like lifting a trophy, it’s about celebrating where we are now, while keeping our eyes firmly on what comes next.
